November 1999 - Product Name Change

In line with the expanding range of mobile devices based on Symbian's EPOC operating system, Advansys is introducing a new naming convention for our leading synchronization products.  Our new synchronization products now bear the LinkWise™ or eSync™ family brandings. The LinkWise family includes agenda and contacts synchronization, while the eSync family focuses on email synchronization.  Mobile device support will be detailed separately in the accompanying product literature.

A range of new Symbian EPOC based devices have been announced recently.  Ericsson is shipping the MC218 and Psion Computers have expanded their range to include the Series 5, Series 5mx, Series 7 and REVO.  Psion Enterprise have launched the NetBook.  More EPOC devices are slated for release in the new year.

Only the latest Advansys products are renamed (i.e. those products designed for Psion PsiWin 2.3).  Our older products for PsiWin 2.2, 2.1 are unaffected by the name change.

Product Names

The new product names reference a product family, version and edition.

Product Family

There are two main synchronization product families: LinkWise™ and eSync™.  The LinkWise family encompasses Advansys calendar and contacts synchronization products.  The eSync family encompasses Advansys email synchronization products.

Product Version

Product versions will follow the commonly adopted ‘year’ model.  The pending and renamed products will commence at version 2000 (LinkWise 2000 and eSync 2000).

Product Edition

The third party software product supported by each solution will be shown as a particular edition.  For example, the Novell GroupWise calendar/address book synchronization product is named LinkWise 2000 – Novell GroupWise Edition.  The Novell GroupWise email synchronization product is named eSync 2000 – Novell GroupWise Edition.

The new product names are shown below:

LinkWise™ Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 is now LinkWise™ 2000 – Novell GroupWise Edition

ACT! Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 is now LinkWise 2000 – Symantec ACT! Edition

Two new products are:

LinkWise™ 2000 – Novell Directory Services Edition

eSync™ 2000 – Novell GroupWise Edition

System Requirements

References to Psion PsiWin have been replaced with the term EPOC Connect.  (PsiWin is the name of Psion’s re-badged EPOC Connect).  The latest version of EPOC Connect is Version 5.0 which equates to PsiWin 2.3 and Ericsson EPOC Connect 1.0.  All new and renamed Advansys synchronization products require EPOC Connect 5.0.

Each product’s README.TXT document and our web site will contain a listing of the supported devices and versions of EPOC Connect.  For example, all renamed products support EPOC Connect 5.0, which means they will work with Psion PsiWin 2.3 and Ericsson EPOC Connect 1.0.

Updating Your Existing Product

Registered or trialware users of existing PsiWin 2.3 level products (i.e. the LinkWise Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 and the ACT! Plugin for PsiWin 2.3) can freely download and install the renamed products from our Web site's download page (www.advansyscorp.com/downloads.htm).  Existing registration status will be maintained.  As there are minor fixes included, we recommend that ACT! and LinkWise Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 users download and install the renamed versions.

Product Name Change FAQ

Why is Advansys renaming some of its products?

The majority of our EPOC synchronization solutions are plug-ins for EPOC Connect.  Until recently, the only version of EPOC Connect in the marketplace was Psion PsiWin, which was shipped with the Psion Computers Series 5 product.  Including 'PsiWin' in our product names allowed us to easily specify minimum hardware and software requirements.

Psion and other vendors have released new devices which our products support.  In addition to Psion PsiWin 2.3, other vendors have ‘re-badged’ Symbian EPOC Connect 5.0 using different names, such as Ericsson’s EPOC Connect 1.0.  Our new, more 'generic' product naming conventions address the proliferation of EPOC devices and the variety of names being used for the same base connectivity software.

Which products are affected?

The renaming only affects the most recent versions of our LinkWise™ and ACT! Plugins for PsiWin 2.3Apart from the two products listed below, no other products are being renamed.

The LinkWise™ Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 is now LinkWise™ 2000 – Novell GroupWise Edition

The ACT! Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 is now LinkWise™ 2000 – Symantec ACT! Edition

New Advansys products will follow the new naming convention.  Watch our web site www.advansyscorp.com for impending releases.

Do the renamed versions include more features?

The renamed products now include support for the new Psion REVO and Ericsson MC218.  They do not include new functionality, although they may have minor fixes included.  Please check the README.TXT and product support pages for additional information.

Can I get a free product update?

Registered and trialware users of the LinkWise Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 and the ACT! Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 can freely download and install the renamed versions from our Web site (www.advansyscorp.com/downloads.htm).  The registered status of your software will be retained when you install the new versions.

Is product support affected in any way?

No.  We continue to provide support for the LinkWise Plugin for PsiWin 2.3 and the ACT! Plugin for PsiWin 2.3.  However, new fixes and enhancements will only be included in the renamed version of the product.  We recommend that existing users download and install the renamed versions.

Is the product cost affected?

No.

Which EPOC devices do the renamed products support?

You can find a current list of the supported devices on our Web site, www.advansyscorp.com/products.htm, and in the readme file which accompanies each product.

What is EPOC Connect and why is it important?

EPOC Connect is the name of Symbian's connectivity software, which provides the synchronization engine used by our software.  Vendors who licence the EPOC operating system generally ‘re-badge’ (rename) EPOC Connect to reflect the name of their mobile device solution.  Psion PsiWin 2.3 and Ericsson EPOC Connect 1.0 are both examples of 're-badged' Symbian EPOC Connect 5.0.

The system requirements statement for our software now references the minimum version of EPOC Connect.  The renamed versions of our software require EPOC Connect version 5.0 (PsiWin 2.3, Ericsson EPOC Connect 1.0).  You can find a list of supported EPOC Connect versions for each product on our Web site, www.advansyscorp.com/products.htm, and in the readme file which accompanies each product.

Online documentation for the renamed products now refer to EPOC Connect.
