Today View – no. of items

I have installed the today view, but would like to understand where it gets the number of items it displays.

For example, it says the # of items in my mailbox is 435, when I have only 11 items.

My Work in Progress indicates 1 – I have nothing in there!

Where is it getting its numbers? The Outlook Today view indicates the number of unread messages in the folders – is there a way to make the Today view do something similar? Or at least if not the Unread messages, then the real number of messages?
